The Key Design Requirements for an Amazing Finnish Sauna

This talk regarding Finnish sauna design considers heat, air quality and structure of the hot room as the main aspects in proper Finnish sauna design. During the workshop I introduce the prevailing  best practices and research-based insights on how well functioning, experiential saunas are built. The participants learn the essentials of what it takes to recreate perfect löyly experiences regardless or hot room size or heating solution, relying on smart combination of well known solutions.

  1. Heat: learn about different sauna stoves and their key properties: manufacturers and models typical in Finland. The importance of sauna stones and prevalent varieties in operation.
  2. Air quality: solutions for sauna ventilation in both natural and mechanical setting
  3. Hot room structures: the importance of sauna benches, ceiling, floor, walls, lighting and overall material choices.

Saunologi Lassi Liikkanen (C) Reetta Saarikko

Dr. Lassi Liikkanen is an Adjunct Professor of Human-centered product design at Aalto University in Finland. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings in the fields of product design, interactive technology, music psychology and cognitive neuroscience - and naturally sauna.

At present he works full-time in the Finnish industry around digital transformation and interaction design. As a hobby he collects, creates, digitalizes and disseminates sauna-related knowledge through Saunologia.fi website accessed annually by over 400,000 Finnish visitors. In 2019, he has authored a book, Secrets of Finnish Sauna Design, available also in English since 2021.

Lassi’s ambition is to help improving the quality of Finnish style saunas from Earth to Mars. To this end, his research interests focus on sauna technology and design, although he remains widely interested history, culture and health aspects of sauna.

Lecture at Aalto University Design Factory, 4th Feb 2020

If houses are machines for living, saunas are sanctuaries for serenity, relaxation and wellbeing.

Lassi Liikkanen, Author of the new Finnish sauna design book and a docent of Product design at Aalto University,  will have a public talk at Aalto Design Factory (room the Stage; https://goo.gl/maps/tuDggeifnWXBrpMU6 ) on Tuesday 4th of February at 5.30pm.

His talk describes the most important design secrets around classic Finnish sauna, focusing mostly on three areas: heat, air quality, and interior design.  The talk is based on his book, Hyvien löylyjen salaisuus (Rakennustieto, 2019; Saunologia.fi/kirja).

The talk will be followed by a chance to try out two unique saunas of ADF!

Talk begins 17.30, saunas will be warm after 18.30. Bring your own drinks.
